ZAPP würdigt den verstorbenen Roger Troutman auf:
Zapp VII: Roger & Friends
Das neue Album setzt die 40-Jährige Funk-Tradition der Band mit Gastauftritte von Bootsy Collins, Frankie J., Tuxedo, Kurupt, Snoop Dogg Alvin Garrett u.v.a.
Im Jahr 1978 gründeten vier Brüder aus Dayton, Ohio – Roger, Larry, Lester und Terry Troutman – die Elektro-Funk-Band Zapp mit dem einzigen Ziel, die Leute auf die Tanzfläche zu locken. Ihr 1980 veröffentlichtes und nach der Band benanntes Debutalbum wurde von Bootsy Collins und mit Unterstützung von P-Funk Gründer George Clinton produziert. Dank der darauf enthaltenen Hit-Single „More Bounce to the Ounce“, die von den nachfolgenden Rappergeneration und Hip-Hop Stars, wie beispielsweise EPMD, The Notorious B.I.G., Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Easy-E und Snoop Dogg gesampelt wurde, erreichte das Album Goldstatus. „Ich bin sicher, dass es von diesem Song über 600 Coverversionen gibt“, meint Lester Troutman Jr., der sich um die geschäftlichen Belange der in Dayton beheimateten Band kümmert. „Dieser Song hat echt den Puls der Zeit getroffen. Er wurde in einer Liste mit Dingen aus James Browns Katalog geführt. Es kam sogar fast so weit, dass man, wenn man einen kommerziellen Erfolg einfahren wollte, ein Zapp-Roger Sample machen musste.“
Roger Troutman, dem begnadeten Multiinstrumentalisten, Sänger und Arrangeur gelang 1982 mit der Single „Dance Floor” auf dem Folgealbum der Band Zapp II ein ähnlich grosser Erfolg. Die aus Brüdern zusammengestellte Band blieb mit Zapp III aus 1983, Zapp IV aus 1985 auf Goldkurs und lieferte 1989 Zapp V: Zapp Vibe ab. Das Schicksal schlug 1999 zu und riss Roger, die treibende künstlerische Kraft der Gruppe, sowie dessen älteren Bruder Larry viel zu früh aus dem Leben. Die Band stellte sich daraufhin neu auf und meldete sich 2001 mit Zapp VI: Back By Popular Demand in der internationalen Musikszene zurück.
Jetzt haben die Funkateers mit Zapp VII: Roger & Friends ein Album fertiggestellt, auf dem sie die 40-jährige Geschichte der Band feiern und den kreativen Geist von Roger Troutman würdigen. Das Album wird am 26. Oktober 2018 auf dem LEOPARD Label erscheinen. Die für Roger typischen Elemente Talkbox sowie die synthetischen Bass Lines kommen hier in Songs wie „Rock Ya Body” (mit Mr. Talkbox), „Shy” (mit Tuxedo), „Make it Funky” (mit Bootsy Collins), „Red & Dollars” (mit Snoop Dogg) und „After Party” (mit Kurupt) voll zum Einsatz und so ist auch dieses neueste Zapp-Album wie dafür gemacht, die Leute auf die Tanzfläche zu locken. Lester Troutman Jr. erklärt: “In dieser Gruppe ging es immer um drei Dinge: pack sie, bring sie zum Tanzen und schau, dass sie nicht aufhören zu tanzen. Und ganz ehrlich, ich glaube, dass das Geheimnis des Erfolges von Zapp die Authentizität der Band ist. Sie wollen dich wirklich zum Tanzen bringen und mit ihrer Musik dabei helfen, dass du dabei alle deine Alltagsprobleme für einen Moment vergisst.”
Zapp VII: Roger & Friends beinhaltet auch einen posthumen Auftritt von Roger selbst, und zwar in „Red & Dollars” und der wunderschönen Ballade „Angel”. Dazu wurde Material aus alten Demoaufnahmen verwendet. Seine Stimme ist auch in einer Sequenz zu hören, in der er erzählt, wie er auf die Idee mit der Talk Box gekommen ist und welchen Effekt die gesprochenen Worte in „Zappa & Roger” auf die Tänzer hatte. „Roger war eigentlich Gitarrist”, erzählt Larry Troutman Jr. „Er liebte Jazz, er liebte Instrumentalmusik, aber er war auch ein großartiger Producer-Arrangeur im Studio und er hat etwas entwickelt, das die Menschen begeistert hat. Daher ist es wunderbar, wenn West Coast Legenden wie Snoop, DJ Battlecat und Kurupt das Genie und die kreativen Fähigkeiten von Roger auf diesem neuen Album würdigen.”
Vom Anfang bis zum Ende ist Zapp VII: Roger & Friends die Erfüllung der 40-jährigen Geschichte der Elektro-Funk Pioniere aus Ohio. Auf der nun anstehenden Tournee von Zapp durch die USA, Europa und Asien wird das Publikum begeistert sein. Larry Troutman Jr. beschreibt es so: „Wenn du die Band auf der Bühne erlebst und die Musik beginnt dich so richtig mitzureißen, dann gibt es kein Halten mehr. Die Leute machen Backflips auf der Tanzfläche und gehen voll mit. Bei Zapp spürst du die Musik im ganzen Körper.”
